Winners Crowned in European Championships

Alex Lely did his best to make his home country of The Netherlands proud, and he did it o n his home turf.  After capturing the 8-ball title earlier in the week, Lely marched through the 9-ball field as well, defeating Germany's Ralf Souquet in the finals.

Lely started off the second week with a solid performance over Poland's Radoslaw Babica in the 8-ball's semifinals.  After going down 1-0, Lely worked the score to 3-2 in his favor.  Babica took the next game to tie the match up, but Lely went o n a tear, winning four straight to earn the victory 7-3.

Denver/ Pueblo Dominate ACS Rocky Mountain Regionals

azbilliards.com

Denver/ Pueblo Dominate ACS Rocky Mountain Regionals

Independent league operators sanctioned with the American CueSports Alliance from throughout the Rocky Mountain front range invited their players to the ValuStay Inn in Pueblo, Colorado the weekend of February 18-20, to compete in the association's first ACS Rocky Mountain Regional Singles/ Scotch Doubles 8-Ball Championships. This was host Pueblo's first-ever state pool championships, and the proceedings were first-rate thanks to the host tournament producers Ray Armenta and Wayne Barnes, their local staff, and some very able tournament direction from Denver, featuring ACS Regional President, David Howell, Terri Howell, Jimmie Dean Birdsall and John Fuller, and play on twenty-seven Valley Cougars provided by High Country Promotions.

In the Men's tough AA/AAA singles division, local star, Sam Martinez, had his hands full being down 2-4 to 2004 national amateur Player of the Year, Scott Tollefson, in the first round before recovering to upset Mr. Tollefson, 5-4. Tollefson recovered by eliminating all opposition on the B side to gain a chance for revenge against Martinez, who had taken the A side undefeated. But alas, Martinez was ready to hold off Tollefson and did so by a convincing 5-1 margin in the finals to claim his first-ever state title.

A similar scenario took place in the Women's A singles division, as Aurora's Carol Raudebaugh outpaced 2004 BCA National Women's Open champ, Debbie Snook, to take state division honors.

The Men's A singles division featured the courageous play of Colorado Spring's Laura Lo, as the former collegiate national champion and BCA Nationals Open runner-up spurned the women's division so she could take on the men. She eliminated some strong talent on both sides of the bracket before facing undefeated James Hildebrandt (Pueblo) in the finals. Hildebrandt remained undefeated, claiming a first-set win for the title, but our hats are off to Ms. Lo for earning the respect of many of the state's top players with her inspired performance.

The Women's B singles division was all Terry Duncan of Littleton. Duncan was vowing to improve on her 4th place showing from 2004 when the state event was under the auspices of the BCA, and she succeeded by running the table in the bracket, including a win over Aurora's Pam James in the finals.

Despite the distractions of overseeing the event production, Pueblo's Ray Armenta remained focused on straight shooting throughout the Championships, as he bested the largest field in the tournament - the Men's B singles division - with an undefeated run, capped by a strong win over Littleton's Jay Goplin in the finals to claim his first-ever state title!

In the Scotch Doubles division, Carol Radebaugh added to her hardware, as she teamed up with partner Roy Treggiari (also of Aurora) to out-pace the undefeated team of Seenae Kim/Norm Meder (Colorado Springs) in two sets in the finals for the crown.

Congratulations to the independent league operators, officers and volunteers who unselfishly spent countless hours of pre-planning and work in the previous months to make this state championship a very special benefit for the ACS league players throughout the region. The success of this event is spurring the association to plan adding an annual state ACS team championships for next year at a separate quarter of the year from the singles/scotch doubles, the success of which assures an annual championships for the future.

Gray Wins St Albans 8 Ball Open

Mark Gray, the Peterborough cueman who recently hung up his snooker cue in favour of the American pool disciplines, has won the BPPPA St Albans 8 Ball Open, beating Rico Diks 9-8 in the final. Held at the brand new Rileys club in St Albans on 26th February, this was the largest American 8 ball tournament ever played in this country, and it carried half ranking points on the BPPPA's 9 ball tour..

Gray, who made the final in the Doncaster Open a fortnight ago, made it through the double elimination phase undefeated with wins of 9-1 over James Frith, 7-5 over Daryl Peach and 7-2 over Matt Potter. Once into the last 16 single knockout phase, Gray saw off Raj Hundal 7-5, then beat Daryl Peach again 7-4, before meeting James Kay in the semi-final. A 7-6 win took him into the final against Diks, a former European 9 ball champion and the most experienced 8 ball player present, whose distinguished record includes having once been runner-up in 8 ball at the European championships.

Rico had to battle through the one-loss side after being knocked out in his second game 7-6 by Gareth Esprit. Wins of 5-1, 5-3 and 5-1 against Matthew Andrews, Joe Sims and James Popplewell respectively, brought him back into the running in the last 16. Wins over Steve Evans, Andy Worthington and James Frith took him into the final.

Losing semi-finalists were James Kay and James Frith, with Daryl Peach, Jon Davies, Andy Worthington and Gareth Esprit making the quarters. The rest of the last 16 field were: Raj Hundal, Imran Majid, Nigel Webb, Tim McGarry, Steve Evans, Adam Smith, Simon Widlo and David Walsh

It's Noon on Central FL Fury Tour

Sixty-three players met at Strokers Billiards on February 27, 2005 to determine the winner of the third Fury Central Florida event. It looked like it would be Jason Richko when he defeated Nomar Paula to get into the hot seat match, or maybe Justin Hall who sent Tim Daniel to the B side. When Richko and Hall matched up for the hot seat match, it was a back and forth double-hill fight for the throne, until Richko took the spot in the finals, sending Hall left.

Upon his arrival to the B side, Hall met Robert Noon who had been busy sending players home for the last few hours. Noon had lost his fourth match of the day, but still had his eye on the finals. Noon continued his winning quest and put Justin Hall out of the tournament, leaving him in 3rd place.

This set up the finals between Noon and Richko which swiftly went to Noon. Other notable play came from Strokers room owner Jose DelRio who took 5th/6th, and Baron's Billiards room owner Tim Baron who took 7th/8th.

Bustamante In Classic Win Over Pagulayan

Bustamante In Classic Win Over Pagulayan

Francisco "Django" Bustamante staged an incredible comeback when all seemed lost after he was down 2-8 to Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan in the race-to-fifteen finals of the Hope P1million All-Filipino Billiards Championship and pulled off another sensational 15-13 win to pocket the top prize of P500,000 at the packed IBC 13 television studios late Sunday.

Bustamante who had sent Pagulayan to the losers bracket in a 9-8 cliffhanger in the elimination round couldn't get his game going and when Pagulayan, the reigning World Pool Champion made an easy 2-9 combo after Bustamante scratched to lead 3-0, there was absolutely no inkling of what was to come. Pagulayan demonstrating exquisite control of the cue ball raced to a 5-1 lead before Bustamante, former world No. 1 began to get into his rhythm and a terrific 1-9 combination made it 5-2.

Pagulayan broke and ran out before Bustamante came up empty on his break allowing Pagulayan to move further ahead 7-2. With "The Lion" roaring to an 8-2 lead on another fantastic shot following a fabulous safety by Bustamante, the fans began to believe that the match was virtually over except for a few diehard Bustamante fans. Somehow it seemed the entry of IBC's top executive Philip Juico who is from the same region as Bustamante was the good luck charm as the Tarlac native quickly turned things around. Pagulayan scratched on the break in the twelfth rack and Bustamante after a run-out then sealed a 1-9 combination to come to within 8-4.

Another scratch on the break appeared to unsettle Pagulayan even as Bustamante, breaking much better and playing excellent positional pool came to within a rack at 9-8. Pagulayan's heartbreaking miss when the 3-ball rattled out of the "killer" corner pocket at the top of the table which had been the undoing of several players including Efren "Bata" Reyes, enabled Bustamante to tie the score at 10-10 and a run out on the next rack gave him the lead for the first time and brought a smile to his face. The two superstars of pool, considered two of the greatest players in the world today, traded racks before Pagulayan, down 14-13 after another Bustamante break and flawless run-out began singing "There's a light of Hope."

But hope flickered and then died as Pagulayan missed a long shot on the 1-ball and Bustamante rammed the 8-ball in screaming "that's it" before sealing the remarkable victory with a grin and a shout. Aristeo "Putch" Puyat, acknowledged internationally as the "Godfather" of Philippine pool who staged the tournament under the auspices of the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines headed by its president Edgar Fajardo and with the cooperation of Jemah TV president Marc Roces, was elated over the quality of the match and the form of the Filipinos who will begin their quest for honors in the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour which opens in Singapore on Friday.

Fastest Stick Slinger in the West

Mike 'The Kid' Vidas made quick work of the 'Red Rocket' Tim Tweedell at the Cadillac Ranch Casino stop of the West Coast Pechauer Tour this weekend. The single race finals looked to favor Tweedell as he jumped to a 5-0 lead, but it was all downhill from there. To say that Vidas shut him down is an understatement; the crowd was in awe as he went on to dominate the match in an astounding 13-6 final score.

Tour followers might have wondered how Glenn Atwell would fare this weekend, but Stan Tourangeau and Don Wirtaman could have cared less as they sent him packing in a disappointing 9th place finish. And what happened to Raul Abenojar? He was a no show this weekend even though he was tied for second place in points.

Promoters predict that Tinsley Johnson will be the dark horse player this year. After traveling all the way from California with his road partners Gilbert Arellano and Josh Palmer, Johnson used the Northwest players to sharpen his edges and tune up on his road to the BCA Open this May. He showed the Oregon and Washington players what it means to have heart storming through a field of incredible talent like a man on fire! His buddy Gilbert sent him over to the one loss side in the 3rd round and it was all Tinsley after that! He disposed of Dan Rodriguez of Aloha, OR, Tom Seymour of San Francisco, CA, Chuck Mileur of Troutdale, OR, Tony Balzer of Salem, OR, John Doherty of Seattle, WA, Paul Potier of Vancouver, BC, Stan Tourangeau also of Vancouver, BC before falling to Steve Lingelbach of Troutdale, OR to end his reign of terror in 4th place. Johnson seemed to get more and more pumped after each match outwardly displaying his excitement and enthusiasm at winning.

Mary Hopkin of Tri Cities, WA ended up battling against 'Wonder Woman' Linda Carter for the top woman; and it was 'Wonder Woman' who got lassoed to her chair as Hopkin dominated the match 7-2.

We would like to thank the Cadillac Ranch Casino for their incredible hospitality. Paul Potier was especially appreciative of his good fortune at the card table! The Cadillac has an awesome menu, lots of action and non stop pool and cards! The next stops are scheduled for March 12th and 13th in Cypress, CA at Hot Shots Billiard Caf?, and then March 19th and 20th in Portland, OR at the Amazon Sports Bar & Grill. We hope to see you there. For a complete schedule or information about the tour and participating in stops visit www.azbilliards.com or www.onthewirebilliards.com.

DiPietro earns first Planet Pool Victory

The Planet Pool Tour held their third stop of the year at Bill & Billies CueSport in Arnold, MD this weekend with a field of 93 players in the open division.

Joe DiPietro, playing in only his second Planet Pool event, shocked the field with an undefeated trip through the brackets. 'The Genie Man' Ryan McCreesh came within one game of stopping DiPietro, but lost hill-hill for the hot-seat. McCreesh then lost to Kevin West 7-5 on the left side of the board. West had lost his first match on Saturday to Steve Fleming but won 11 straight to earn his spot in the finals.

As strong as West had been playing, he couldn't get by DiPietro who cruised to an 11-4 win in the finals.

DiPietro earned $1500 for first, while West settled for $1000. McCreesh and Brandon Shuff filled out the top four spots.

The ladies division saw 28 players hope to take home the $500 first prize. Kathy Friend took the hot-seat with 7-2 win over Tina Meraglio. Meraglio bounced back with a 5-2 win over Jin Hee Park on the one-loss side and then a dominating 9-1 victory over Friend in the finals.

Josh Degler scored an impressive tournament win at the SE Open 9-Ball Tour Stop at the Orlando Billiard Center in Orlando, FL.

Degler went undefeated and took the hot-seat with a 9-4 win over Adam Smith on the winners side.

Wheeler dropped to the one-loss side where Richard Broumpton was knocking them down after a Saturday loss to Tommy Kennedy. Broumpton made quick work of Wheeler with a 9-2 win.

The finals went to hill-hill with both players unwilling to give an inch, but in the end it was Degler with the 11-10 win.

Degler earned $760 for first, while Broumpton pocketed $500 for second. Wheeler and John Demet filled out the top four spots. The $50 top junior bonus went to Justin Gilsinan and the $50 top female bonus was split between Jennifer Nelson and Courtney Borge.

Charlie Bryant held on to win the Viking Cue $10,000 added double regional Championship at The Pool Room in Marietta, GA this weekend with a second set win over 'Canadian Ice' Brian Butler.

As play started on Sunday, the previously unbeaten players started falling from the ranks fast. Both Helena Thornfeldt and Monica Webb forfeited their matches on Sunday when they couldn't make it to the room. That opened the door for BJ Ussery and David Broxson to advance unchallenged. Earl Strickland, the second most expensive player in the calcutta dropped a match early Sunday and couldn't seem to get it together on the one-loss side. He finished in 9th place.

On the winners side, Charlie 'Hillbilly' Bryant took the hot-seat with a dominating 9-2 win over Butler. Butler went to the one-loss side and beat David Broxson 7-4 in a match that wasn't even that close as Broxson couldn't get anything really started all match long.

The true double elimination finals got under with Butler taking an early lead over Bryant in the first set. Bryant clawed his way back into the match on two different occasions, but continuously player catch-up finally caught up with Bryant as Butler won 9-6. Bryant turned the tables on Butler in the second set and quickly got out to a 4-0 lead. Butler got back to 4-2, before Bryant raced to the hill at 8-2. Butler won the next two games, but it was too little too late as Bryant won the 13th rack for the 9-4 victory.

Bryant earned $4920 for first place, while Butler settled for $3500. Broxson and Ussery filled out the top four spots.

All in all, it was a great event with a room full of fans who stayed until 2am just to watch the final match between Hillbilly and Butler.

The $25,000 added Viking National Championship will get underway on Wedneday at Palace Billiards in Villa Park, IL. We will have complete coverage of that event with brackets and photo galleries from Diana Hoppe.

Ga-Young Kim Wins Capone's Spirit Tour Stop

Reigning World Champion Ga-Young Kim went undefeated and held off a charging Jeannie Seaver to win the Ladies Spirit Tour at Capone's Billiard Lounge in Spring Hill Florida.

Kim, currently ranked #8 on the WPBA Tour, dominated the field on her way to the hot-seat, which she took with a 7-2 win over #12 ranked Sarah Ellerby. When Ellerby got to the one-loss side, she had her hands full with 'The Comeback Kid' Jeannie Seaver. Seaver had lost her first match of the tournament on Saturday, but lived up to her nickname again and tore through the one-loss side to get to Ellerby. The match between Ellerby and Seaver came down to the wire with Seaver scoring the 7-6 win to earn her spot in the finals.

Kim came out 'on fire' in the finals and cruised to a 4-0 lead. It looked like Seaver might not even get on the board, but she had other plans as she won four of the next five games to get back within one game at 5-4 down. Seaver's run must have gotten Kim's attention as Ga-Young went on to win two of the next three games for the 7-5 victory.

Kim earned $725 for first place, while Seaver took home $525 for second. Ellerby and Helene Caukin filled out the top four spots. Caukin earned the WPBA qualifier as the top finishing player without a spot already guaranteed in the WPBA event.

The Ladies Spirit Tour will be at Kiss Shot Bar & Billiards in Coral Springs, FL on March 19th and 20th for their next event.

Putnam Snares First Major Victory By Bill Rosenberger

Shawn Putnam was excited to finally have a professional billiards event come through what he calls his "backyard," referring to Pittsburgh, PA. On Thursday night, he was even more thrilled when he sank the final 9 ball to win the North American Open Tour's Pittsburgh stop.

Putnam, who grew up and lives just 45 minutes away in Youngstown, OH, made his way through the five-day event undefeated, besting some of the UPA's best players, including Rodney Morris, Jeremy Jones, Mike Davis, and Santos Sambajon Jr. And, after a commanding 11-7 win in the final match, Charlie "The Korean Dragon" was added to the list.

Pagulayan Sets Up Dream Rematch With Bustamante

Reigning World Pool Champion Alex 'The Lion' Pagulayan set up a dream rematch with Francisco 'Django' Bustamante by scoring an impressive 11-6 victory over Antonio 'Ga-Ga' Gabica, ending Gabica's amazing unbeaten run in the Hope P1 million All-Filipino Billiards Open at the IBC 13 studios after Bustamante hardly worked up a sweat in defeating Gandy Valle 11-4 at the IBC television studios late Saturday.

Pagulayan had to come through the losers bracket after he lost an epic 9-8 cliffhanger to Bustamante but showed no signs of trouble as he blazed past giant-killer Rodolfo 'Boy Samson' Luat 9-4. Luat who had earlier ousted top favorite Efren 'Bata' Reyes and Warren Kiamco in succession had no answer to 'The Lion' who roared to a 4-0 lead before Luat clawed back to make it 4-4. Pagulayan quickly rattled off five racks in a row to seal the win and move on to the semi final clash with Gabica.

Bustamante, former world No. 1, quickly showed he would be hard to beat by racing to a 4-1 lead against Valle. After closing out the sixth rack on a 2-9 combo Valle failed to capitalize when Bustamante scratched and missed an easy shot on the 8-ball allowing Bustamante to run out 5-2. A golden break made it 6-2 and a couple of great safeties were capped with a 7-9 combination to wrap it up 11-4. Valle had earlier beaten Lee Van Corteza 9-5 in a losers bracket knockout match to set up the semi final showdown with Bustamante.

The North American Open Tour has reached Day 4, and the field is dwindling down. There are now four players left in the winners’ bracket, while eight others are fighting to stay alive in the one-loss side.

Archer’s opponent in the winners’ bracket will be Tony Robles, who knocked Niels Feijen to the left side with an 11-7 win. Feijen then fell to Corey Deuel 11-9. Deuel, too, had suffered a defeat on Tuesday night at the hands of Jeremy Jones.

Big Three in Pool Keep on Winning

Big Three in Pool Keep on Winning

The big three in pool, Efren 'Bata' Reyes, Francisco 'Django' Bustamante and Alex 'The Lion' Pagulayan kept their winnings ways in the late night opening day matches of the round of sixteen at the Hope P1 million All-Filipino Billiards Open, sponsored by Talk N' Text and Smart and staged under the leadership of Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines president Edgar Fajardo in partnership with the acknowledged 'Godfather' of pool Aristeo 'Putch' Puyat.

Reyes cruised past Carlos Viado 9-5 in the alternate break format and will next face Antonio 'Ga-Ga' Gabica who earlier stunned Warren Kiamco 9-7. Bustamante, the former world No. 1 played some scintillating pool to rout Joven Alba 9-2 and will clash with young sensation Jeffrey De Luna whose style reminds fans of Reyes and has been christened 'Jeff Bata' because of his magical shots while Pagulayan whipped veteran Dy 9-3.

Promising 'Marvelous' Marlon Manalo, the former snooker ace who was forced to forfeit his opening match against De Luna because of a high fever was scheduled to face Alba in the losers bracket where Dy would take on veteran Leonardo 'Dodong' Andam who was earlier beaten by Gandy Valle 9-5. Kiamco who finished runner-up three times in the 2004 San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour was hoping to stay alive with a win over Viado in the losers side.

In an added incentive to the players in the round of sixteen, respected businessman-sportsman Puyat, president of Puyat Sports, announced that instead of one slot assigned to the top player in the All-Filipino Billiards Open on the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour which opens in Singapore on March 4, there will be two for the Philippines aside from seeded players Reyes, Bustamante, Pagulayan and Lee Van Corteza who flirted with disaster before pulling through against snooker champion Luis Saberdo 9-7 in his opening match.

Reyes who topped the money winners list on the international pool circuit last year with a cool $124,500/- and has so far won nearly $47,000 this year is the sentimental favorite although he is expected to face stiff competition from longtime buddy Bustamante and Pagulayan.

North American Open Hits Pittsburgh
By InsidePOOL Staff

A field of 61 players flocked to Pittsburgh, PA, for the second stop of the North American Open Tour.  The event, being held at the Hilton Hotel, started at 3:00 p.m. Sunday and will run through Thursday, February 24.

The field includes some the top players in the world, including Johnny "The Scorpion" Archer, Santos Sambajon Jr., Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich, Rodney Morris, Keith McCready, and Gabe Owen.

Basavich, who was featured in the February 14 issue of Sports Illustrated, quickly ousted local player Greg Lok 11-1.  The up-and-coming player has to be considered a favorite, especially since he has finished very high in his last few events, which includes a December win in Reno, NV, and most recently, the Ocean State 9-Ball tournament.  But, that's not to discount any of the other competing pros who are looking to start the 2005 season off on the right foot.

North American Open Day TWo

Day two of the North American Open Tour event at The Hilton Pittsburgh got underway with no real upsets to speak of yet.

The bad weather between New York and Pittsburgh got the best of a couple players who were expected to compete, as both Keith McCready and Ryan McCreesh did not make it to Pittsburgh for the event.

The usual suspects advanced into round two with marquee matches scheduled on Monday between Johnny Archer and Troy Frank, Charlie Williams and Thorsten Hohmann, Tony Robles and Jeff White, Rodney Morris and Robb Saez as well as Charlie Bryant and Shawn Putnam.

2004 Reno Open Champion Danny Basavich is in attendance with his feature article in Sports Illustrated. The story is being billed as one of the best stories about a pool player in a non-billiards national magazine in years. Basavich is also answering questions from fans right here in the AzBilliards forums. Danny promises more surprises later in the week.

Diana Hoppe is also in attendance and we will have a photo gallery from her online later in the day.

Brackets are online and updated with all of the action from day one.
